Sitting out a term (When is a Leave of Absence required?)

Due to emergencies, or work or family obligations, it is sometimes necessary for students to sit out a term. Taking a break for Summer term is easy; Sitting out a Fall or Spring term requires a Leave of Absence.

Summer Term

There is no minimum enrollment requirement for Summer terms, and students may "take a break" from their studies for Summer terms without having to submit any paperwork.

Fall or Spring Term

There is a 3-credit minimum enrollment requirement for Fall and Spring terms. If you do not register for at least 3 credits by the registration deadline, your status in the online registration system (MyNEVADA) will be changed to "inactive" or "discontinued." When you try to register in MyNEVADA the following term, you will be advised that you are "not a current student." You will not be able to register for courses in MyNEVADA until you have submitted a Notice of Reinstatement to Graduate Standing - approved by our department and the Graduate School. If the Notice is not submitted timely, you may be subject to late charges when you register, or you may miss registration altogether. We advise students to try to register early to determine their active/inactive status.

You can avoid becoming "inactive," by submitting a Leave of Absence request (link below). When you do this, you may sit out a Fall or Spring term, but MyNEVADA should will recognize you as an active student when you register the following term. (No Notice of Reinstatement is necessary.)

If you need to extend your Leave for an additional term, you must contact the Graduate School. By doing so, MyNevada will still recognize you as active. (No Notice of Reinstatement is necessary.)

In sum, if you sit out a Fall or Spring term without being on official Leave, or extend your Leave without approval by the Graduate School, you must submit a Notice of Reinstatement before you can resume your studies.

"Graduate Specials": If you have "Graduate Special" status, and you miss a Fall or Spring term, you must reapply for that status - Leaves and Reinstatements are not applicable.

Leave of Absence request

A leave of absence is a temporary cessation of study and may be granted for up to one year. Students requesting a leave of absence must be in good academic standing and submit a completed form, “Request for a Leave of Absence,” to the Graduate School before the period of leave begins. Time spent on an approved leave is included in the time allowed to complete the degree, i.e. six calendar years for the master’s degree and eight calendar years for the doctoral degree.

Complete and sign the form and send this to the JM department via mail, email, or fax to: (775) 784-6273 (not the number on the actual form). It must first be signed by your Major Advisor (JM Assistant Program Director) and by the Graduate (JM) Program Director, then the JM department will forward it to the Graduate School. There is no cost to requesting a Leave of Absence if it is submitted timely. (Also, if the Leave is submitted early enough, you will not have to submit a Reinstatement form.)

Notice of Reinstatement

If no Leave request was made, or if it was not made timely, you must submit a Notice of Reinstatement before you can register for courses. As of August 2013, there is a $60 Reinstatement fee which will be imposed on your UNR account. Complete and sign the form and send this to the JM department via mail, email, or fax to: (775) 784-6273 (not the number on the actual form). It must first be signed by the Graduate (JM) Program Director, then the JM department will forward it to the Graduate School.
